tonight! tonight! tonight!

fourtrack is back on the air this evening from midnight, and if you tune in you'll hear melbourne's plankton, who are in town for the gauche launch at Candy's apartment on thursday, plus have a new album out soon. Also, a chat we had with kimya dawson of the moldy peaches. she released a solo rekkid late last year on k records which is bloody lovely, and she's a freaking lovely lady.

also we gots us some new releases by the grey daturas, mugison and 13 + God. and Square # 2 by buck 65.

tune in why not?
tonight from midnight on FBi 94.5.

what is music?

i went to the what is music onathon last night at the metro. here's what i thought of some of the bands....

--

Black Dice were good. A little inconsistant, but there were a lot of awesome moments. that intro beat with the guitar sounding almost spanish was terrific.

Dead C were the most consistant band of the night. Their drummer is tight and loose at the same time somehow. Looking forward to catching them tonight with a proper soundcheck.

Gang Gang Dance should've been incredible, but the sound sucked in that room and everyone was too jaded to get into it. I liked the more UK garage sounding parts of their set, with the booom! garage bass hit.

poor OOIOO. they were brilliant, and if i stayed for the entirity of their set, i'd probably say they were the best band on. why weren't they put on earlier? they had a trumpet!! sadly, i missed the end because a bus* had to be caught.

i think Growing did the droney ten minute guitar tones much more convincingly than Sunn O))). They shouldn't have been first on. Very Nice.

The Residents were on some mid 90's rave shit. i think you had to be over 30 to get it. Or on crack.

The Bumhead Orchestra were way more enjoyable than they should've been. an orchestra of scenesters playing instruments they didn't know how to play, conducted by Tex Perkins. it worked for some reason, and was a highlight.

Pan Sonic were okay, i wasn't really in the mood.

The thirty seconds i saw of chicks on speed should have been spent buying a slurpee. I want to like this band, because i like what they stand for, but i don't like that they suck. sorry.

and that's about it really, everything else was pretty forgettable. there were some good local dj's and laptoppers, and some awful ones. the von crapp family were pretty cool. it was a pretty badly organised festival, but they'll get it right next year.

*i left a gang gang dance 12" on this bus. so i walked from wahroonga station to the bus depot in mt colah to pick it up. that's a lot of walking at 3am.

actually, there was another highlight!!

this korean cafe beneath the metro called Cya!! man, it was the shit!! cheap, good food, complete with free korean side dishes, and while you eat, you listen to urban grooves!! i ate marinated squid whilst gin + juice played thru the stereo!!

double exclamation marks all round!!

--

there are a few more what is music? gigs on this week, tonight at the gaelic club sees Dead C, Sunn O))) and others play, and tomorrow night at the Gaelic Club has Black Dice and more. And if my glowing residents review has you itching to see them, you might wanna be at the metro both this evening and tomorrow. chicks on speed join them. all the deets can be found heeeere.

this right here is, well, a little dull...

so buck 65 released a new album lately, entitled "this right here is buck 65". me and james are big fans of buck's past work, in particular 'square', 'vertex' and 'man overboard'. these unbelievably personal albums were recorded in his bedroom for the most part, using stripped back production and totally not standard hip hop breaks.
buck's latest record revisits his back catalogue, and in amongst new stuff, some older songs have been re-recorded with a band. and while the new stuff is pretty cool, the revisits kinda suck. okay, they really suck. here's a great review that kinda sums up what i think of the new record. i recommend you read this, it's very well written.
over the next few weeks we'll be playing a different section of buck's 2001 release, 'square'. the album is divided into 4 quarters, and we'll play each quarter in it's entirity as the weeks go by. it's a great record, trust us.
